Former Assistant Director Returns to Little Rock from Atlanta
Little Rock, AR (1 March 2006). Proving the old adage wrong, Truman Tolefree is coming home to Little Rock to become the Director of Little Rock Parks and Recreation effective April 17, 2006. His appointment was announced today by Little Rock City Manager Bruce Moore.
Tolefree returns to lead the department where he worked from 1976 to 1995. From 1991 to 1995, he served as Assistant Director of Little Rock Parks and Recreation. He left Little Rock to become Deputy Director of the Bureau of Recreation for Atlanta’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs. In 2000, he was named Director of the Bureau of Recreation.
“I have known Truman for several years,” stated Moore in making the announcement. “He was here when I first started with the City, and I look forward to working with him again. Truman offers a unique set of leadership qualities. He knows Little Rock: the people and the parks. But because of his decade in Atlanta, he has also has the fresh perspective of an outsider.”
“Truman is well-known for his commitment to customer service,” stated Mayor Jim Dailey. “I know that he will continue to emphasize working with the citizens as he leads the City’s dynamic Parks and Recreation Department.”
Tolefree has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas at Monticello. He also has taken additional coursework at North Carolina State University and UALR. He is a graduate of Leadership Greater Little Rock, and a member of the National Recreation and Parks Association, and the United States Tennis Association.
Tolefree succeeds Bryan Day who was named Assistant City Manager in 2005. He will lead a department with 50 parks, seven community centers, the Adult Leisure Center, War Memorial Fitness Center, four swimming pools, two tennis centers, the River Market, the Riverfest Amphitheatre, the Little Rock Marathon, the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, three golf courses, plus a catering service. In addition, the organization offers a wide-range of youth and adult recreational and sports leagues, after-school and summer playground programs, outdoor activities, therapeutic recreation and programs for seniors. The department employs more than 400 dedicated and experienced people and is accredited through the Commission for Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies.
