Second Annual “Sculpture at the River Market” Announced

(Thursday, September 18, 2008) – Hundreds of sculptures and thousands of visitors will again populate the River Market pavilions when Sculpture at the River Market returns for the second year on October 18 and 19.

Over 800 sculptures will be on display in the River Market pavilions and in the adjacent area of Riverfront Park. The works featured will include all types of media, style, subject matter, and size.

Sculpture at the River Market will feature the works of forty-eight sculptors, including twelve from Arkansas.

Among the sculptors participating are Lorri Acott-Fowler, Gary Alsum, Diane Ashley, Sutton Betti, Kevin Box, Shelley Buonaiuto, Kathleen Caricof, Chapel, Tim Cherry, Dee Clements, Darrell Davis, Jane DeDecker, John Deering, Jim Eppler, Edward Fleming, and Gail Folwell.

Other sculptors include Martin Gates, Daniel Glanz, Carol Gold, Lisa Gordon, Bre & David Harris, Denny Haskew, Dennis Heimbach, Tony Hochstetler, Casey Horn, Hank Kaminsky, Kevin Kresse, Mark Leichliter, Bryan Massey, and Nnamdi Okonkwo.

Rounding out the roster of sculptors are Paul David Petlewany, Sue Quinlan, Don Rambadt, Brian Russell, Wayne Salge, Adam Schultz, Sandy Scott, John Sewell, Hunter Stamps, Ryoichi Suzuki, Margaret Warren, Michael Warrick, CT Whitehouse, Susan Williams, Jan Woods, H G Yoder, and Pete Zaluzec.

“This year, we are proud to have a dozen more sculptors than we had last year. In addition to featuring many of the favorites from last year, we are welcoming some new and exciting sculptors to the show,” said event chair Jane Rogers.

There will be two purchase prizes awarded. One will be given for a piece created by an Arkansas sculptor; the other will go to a sculptor from outside of Arkansas.

“Most sculpture shows only have one purchase prize. But we felt it was important to honor the talent we have here, as well as those from other parts of the country,” explained Rogers.

Admission to Sculpture at the River Market is free. “This will be a great opportunity for families. They can see outstanding sculptures, meet the artists, and experience the newest features of Riverfront Park and the River Market,” said River Market Manager Shannon Light.

Sculpture at the Market will run from 8am to 5pm on Saturday, October 18; and 9am to 3pm on Sunday, October 19.

On Saturday, Sculpture at the River Market will take place in conjunction with the Farmer’s Market. According to Light, “It will be fun to see everyone enjoying sculptures from award-winning artists plus all the great fall fruits and vegetables all in one place. I cannot wait.”

On Friday, October 17, there will be a preview party, sponsored by KATV, Channel 7. Patrons will get the first chance to see the artwork, visit with the sculptors, and purchase sculptures. Tickets for the preview party are $100. According to preview chair Donna Bressinck, “The interior of the River Market will be transformed into an indoor park experience for this event.” Catering will be provided by The Copper Grill.

Proceeds from the sale of artwork will benefit the Riverfront Park Conservancy which is established to fund upgrades in Riverfront Park and the River Market.
