Arkansas, National Sculptors to Show and Sell Art in Little Rock

(Friday, September 14, 2007) – Little Rock residents and visitors alike will have the opportunity to see and purchase works by leading sculptors when the first annual Sculpture at the River Market Invitational Show and Sale takes place from October 5-7, 2007.

Approximately 400 sculptures will be on display in the River Market pavilions and in the adjacent area of Riverfront Park on those three days in October. The works featured will include all types of media, style, subject matter, and size.

Sculpture at the River Market will feature the works of over thirty sculptors, including fourteen from Arkansas. Additionally, students from Arkansas universities and colleges will have pieces in the show.

Among the sculptors participating are Gary Alsum, Diana Ashley, Sutton Betti, Shelley Buonaito, Kevin Box, Kathleen Caricof, Chapel, Tim Cherry, Dee Clements, Jane Dedecker, Edward Fleming, Martin Gates, Daniel Glanz, Carol Gold, Bruce Gueswel, Linda Hall, Bre & David Harris, and Denny Haskew.

Other sculptors include Tony Hochstetler, Hank Kaminsky, Kevin Kresse, Mark Leichliter, Gloria Lewis, Jim Lewis, Philip Major, Bryan Massey, Anne Mitchell, Leo E. Osborne, Louise Peterson, Wayne Salge, Ryan Schmidt, Sandy Scott, Margaret Warren, Michael Warrick, CT Whitehouse, and Pete Zaluzec.

There will be two purchase prizes awarded. One will be given for a piece created by an Arkansas sculptor; the other will go to a sculptor from outside of Arkansas.   “Most sculpture shows only have one purchase prize. But we felt it was important to honor the talent we have here, as well as those from other parts of the country,” said Jane Rogers, event chair.

The weekend was chosen to coincide with the Razorback game at War Memorial Stadium. “We know there will be thousands of fans pouring into Little Rock that weekend. Many will be enjoying the restaurants and museums in the River Market district. This is another great attraction for visitors and residents alike that weekend,” added River Market Manager Shannon Light.

Admission to Sculpture at the River Market is free. “This will be a great opportunity for families. They can see outstanding sculptures, meet the artists, and experience the newest features of Riverfront Park and the River Market,” said Light.

Sculpture at the Market will run from noon to 7pm on Friday, October 5; 10am to 5pm on Saturday, October 6; and 11am to 3pm on Sunday, October 7.

On Saturday, Sculpture at the River Market will take place in conjunction with the Farmer’s Market. According to Light, “It will be fun to see everyone enjoying sculptures from award-winning artists plus all the great fall fruits and vegetables all in one place. I cannot wait.”

On Thursday, October 4, there will be a preview party. Patrons will get the first chance to see the artwork, visit with the sculptors, and purchase sculptures. Tickets for the preview party are $100. According to Rogers, “The interior of the River Market will be transformed into an indoor park experience for this event.” Catering will be provided by downtown Little Rock’s newest restaurant, The Copper Grill.

The sale and show is sponsored by the City of Little Rock and the National Sculptors’ Guild. Proceeds from the sale of artwork will benefit the Riverfront Park Conservancy which is established to fund upgrades in Riverfront Park and the River Market.
