Most Available to Public for First Time Ever
(Wednesday, September 26, 2007) The MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History has recently made a large number of its World War II photographs available on its website.
This project is the result of the Museum’s ongoing partnerships with the Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) and Electronic Data Systems, Inc. (EDS). More than 1,800 of the 4,600 images from the Allison Collection of World War II photographs are now available on the museum's website at www.arkmilitaryheritage.com .
According to Museum Director Stephan McAteer, “This is the first time many of these images have been available to the public and the museum is pleased to be working with AETN and EDS to make all of the collection available in the near future.”
To view the images, scroll to the bottom of the museum's home page, click on "current exhibits," then click on "The Allison Collection of World War II Photographs" on the left side of the tool bar. Scroll to the bottom of the exhibit page and click on "next." You will see various galleries listed. Click on any one of them, which takes you to a table with the images listed by date, image #, and caption. Click on the image # and the photograph and caption will appear.
During World War II, James Allison, a sports writer working for the Houston Press, noticed that many photographs not printed in the newspaper were routinely discarded. He received permission to save these images. By war's end he had amassed a collection of more than 4,600 photographs.
In August 1977, Allison donated his collection to the City of Little Rock. When the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History opened, the photos became a key component of the Museum’s collection.
The MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History relates the military heritage of Arkansas and its citizens to a diverse and widespread audience. Located in the historic Arsenal Building in MacArthur Park--one of Central Arkansas's oldest surviving structures and the birthplace of one of this country's foremost military heroes--the museum collects, preserves, and interprets our state's rich military past from its territorial period to the present.
