LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Feb. 11, 2015)More than 75 volunteers are expected to turn out Saturday morning to plant 25,000 sweet onions at a southwest Little Rock community garden. The community garden, located at Western Hill Parks, is part of a year-long partnership between the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance, Little Rock Parks and Recreation and the Western Hills Neighborhood Association.

The season will kick off on Valentine’s Day morning with the planting party. The garden, now in its second season, harvested approximately 8,000 pounds of food during the first season that ended in December.  The food collected went into the food bank system and was also available to be enjoyed by neighborhood residents.

The onions to be planted on Saturday will be used in the Arkansas Gleaning Project, which provides locally grown, nutritious and fresh produce for local food pantries. Since 2008, the project has grown and gathered more than six million pounds of produce for hungry Arkansans.

Staff from the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance, Little Rock Parks and Recreation and members of the Western Hills Neighborhood Association will be on location with volunteers to instruct and carry out the planting project.
