MacArthur Museum staff member calls for volunteers to help with preservation

Little Rock, April 1, 2013 – Nic Clark, Museum Program Assistant at the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, is asking for volunteers to assist with the clean-up and preservation of Civil War battlefield Reed’s Bridge on Saturday, April 6th.  

 

Civil War Preservation Trust has set aside April 6 as National Park Day, a day where volunteers nation-wide gather to help preserve Civil War battlefields and related sites.  Located fourteen miles from the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History is the battlefield of Reed’s Bridge, which was fought on August 27, 1863 as part of the Little Rock Campaign.  Of the many battles fought during this campaign, Reed’s Bridge is noted for being the best preserved.  Today, Reed’s Bridge is protected by a local not-for-profit group of citizens.

 

Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to contact Nic Clark by 4:30 p.m., Friday, April 5.  Volunteers should bring their own work gloves and wear clothing that they won’t mind getting dirty.  Because the Battle of Reed’s Bridge took place along the banks of Bayou Meto, volunteers who have small boats, such as canoes or kayaks, are encouraged to bring them, as part of the efforts to clean and preserve the battlefield will require going onto Bayou Meto. 

Volunteers might want to bring water proof boots or hip waders for the purpose of going within Bayou Meto to clean up debris. 

 

Refreshments will be provided on-site for volunteers, and there will be an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast for $5.00 in the morning before clean-up begins at the battlefield.  Volunteers will need to drive their own vehicles to Reed’s Bridge.  Those wishing to caravan to the site should meet at the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History no later than 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 6.  Volunteers should plan on being at Reed’s Bridge until 12 noon.  Those who want to stay longer may do so.  All volunteers who caravan from the museum will receive a complimentary copy of The Civil War Quadrennium by William W. O’Donnell.
