Advice to Motorists Given to Enable Streets to Be Cleared Faster

(Monday, December 15, 2008) – In light of the possibility for winter precipitation, Eric Petty, manager of Operations for Little Rock Public Works, is issuing advice to motorists. “This is an appropriate time to reacquaint residents and the motoring public with activities and contingency plans of Public Works associated with inclement winter weather,” said Petty.

When Little Rock has snow or ice storms, Public Works salts all bridges and overpasses first, and then barricades streets and clears major arterials and collector streets as needed. Because of limited equipment, generally only heavier traveled streets are cleared. Motorists are encouraged not to park their vehicles on major streets. This will enable equipment to clear and maintain these critical routes. Motorists, and persons on sleds, are asked to remain clear of vehicles clearing streets, as they would for other emergency vehicles.

Public Works Operations has stockpiled adequate quantities of sand and salt, distributed at sites throughout the City. Crews will be available this evening and throughout the night to respond to circumstances as needed. Public Works is prepared to staff 12-hour shifts if necessary to keep roads and bridges passable.

Solid waste collection services, including garbage, yard waste and recycling pick-ups, may be delayed when normal collections cannot be made because of adverse weather. The City of Little Rock will keep customers informed of any scheduling changes.

As with all forecasts, circumstances may change. Area residents and motorists should listen for any winter storm watches or warnings that may be issued by the National Weather Service.
