(Tuesday, August 7, 2007) – As the temperature rises, the Little Rock Fire Department is pleased to continue its community involvement efforts by announcing the “Beat the Heat” program. Fire Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr today announced this initiative aimed at providing fans for elderly residents.

“We realize that many older people on fixed income may not have adequate air conditioning or even working fans,” said Chief Kerr. “It is crucial that all Little Rock residents have at least a fan to help cool them during these exceedingly hot temperatures.”

“First, we encourage all Little Rock citizens to check on their friends and neighbors to make sure they are not getting too hot during the day. Second, we encourage everyone to donate a new or like-new portable fan at their neighborhood fire station. The Fire Department will be collecting the fans, ensuring that they are in good working order, and then partnering with The Watershed, Inc. to distribute the fans to elderly individuals.”

Fans may be dropped off at any of Little Rock’s fire stations. They should be portable and new or in good working order if used.

Residents who are interested in receiving fans should contact The Watershed at 378-0176 or the Little Rock Fire Department at 918-3704. Fans will be available to be picked up at their facility at 3701 Springer Boulevard.

“We thank Little Rock’s citizens in advance for their generosity. Together, they are partnering with the Little Rock Fire Department as we fulfill our mission of protecting life and property through service and education. "
