Three Little Rock Community Centers to Offer Respite During Heat Wave
(Friday, August 10, 2007)–In light of the current heat wave that is blanketing Little Rock, Mayor Mark Stodola and City Manager Bruce Moore announced today that three Cooling Centers would be opened to offer Little Rock residents a break from the heat.
“The health and welfare of our citizens is a priority,” said Mayor Stodola. “In the midst of this heat wave, we realize there are citizens of Little Rock who do not have air conditioning or fans. We feel it is important to offer them a place to go to escape the heat during the hottest part of the day.”
The Cooling Centers will be located at:
• Dunbar Community Center, 1001 West 16th Street
• East Little Rock Community Center (Nathaniel Hill Complex), 2500 East 6th Street
• Southwest Community Center, 6401 Baseline Road
The hours of operation will be Monday through Friday from 12:00 noon until 4:00 pm. Volunteers from the Arkansas Homeless Coalition will staff the centers assisting persons each day. In addition, Central Arkansas Water will provide bottled tap water at all locations.
These Cooling Centers are a collaborative effort between the City of Little Rock, Mayors’ Commission on Homelessness, Arkansas Homeless Coalition and Central Arkansas Water. Persons needing transportation to the Cooling Centers can call the Arkansas Homeless Coalition at 501-372-5543.
“This is an example of various public agencies working together with volunteers to serve the citizens of Little Rock,” said City Manager Bruce T. Moore. “This spirit of collaboration is key as we continue to address the City’s needs. I am grateful to the groups that are working with the City in offering this service.”
