CELEBRATE WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site Celebrates Women’s History Month with a variety of programs and guest speakers. All events are free and open to the public. Below is a synopsis of events:
March 7, 2009
To celebrate Women’s Month, Park Rangers invite you to enjoy the movie "Chisholm ’72" (77 min.) produced by PBS on March 7, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Historic Site visitor center as part of the ongoing “Picture This…Framing the “Reel” Civil Rights Movement Movie Series.” Popcorn will be provided!
In 1972 Shirley Chisholm became the first African-American woman to be seriously considered as a presidential candidate. “Chisholm ’72” shows the struggles and triumphs of the first black Congresswoman’s fight for the White House. For a complete listing of upcoming movies, visit www.nps.gov/chsc.

Valerie Red-Horse of Cherokee ancestry will discuss women and the economy in the 21st century. Red-Horse currently heads the Tribal Finance/Tribal Asset Management Division of Western International Securities as well as serving at President of Red-Horse Financial Group, her own financial services holding company. The event will take place at the Historic Site visitor center on March 12, 2009 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Bring your lunch and we will provide drinks and dessert.

Civil Rights activist Joanne Bland and co-founder of the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute in Selma, Alabama, will discuss the importance of voting rights. She began her civil rights activism in 1961 as an eight-year-old attending a freedom and voters’ rights meeting presided over by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event will take place at the Historic Site visitor center on March 19, 2009 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Bring your lunch and we will provide drinks and dessert.

Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site is located at 2120 Daisy L. Gatson Bates Drive, diagonally across the street from Central High School.
