On April 30, 2023, 12^th Street Patrol Officers responded to an accident at the 6100 block of West 12^th St. involving a vehicle and pedestrians. MEMS responded to the scene and transported the two pedestrians to local hospitals. The first victim, 40-year-old Nicholas Smith had minor injuries; however, 39-year-old Kenneth Caldwell was in critical condition. Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle, 26-year-old Leroy West III did not sustain any injuries and was transported to the Northwest Station where he provided a urine sample in accordance with state law. 

Accident Reconstruction Officers were called and responded to process the scene and take photographs, collect evidence, and take measurements. At this point in the investigation, no charges have been filed pending a comprehensive review.

#Update: On Thursday May 11, 2023, Mr. Caldwell succumbed from injuries. This investigation is ongoing and next of kin was notified.
