(Tuesday, August 26, 2008) – Little Rock citizens who wish to learn more about the daily operations of City Hall have the perfect opportunity to do so. The City is accepting applications for the second session of the Little Rock Citizens Academy (LRCA). It will take place from September 25 through November 20, 2008.
The LRCA is open to residents of Little Rock, 16 years of age and older. Sessions are held on Thursday evenings from 5:30pm to 8:00pm at various City facilities. There is no cost to participate, but space is limited to 30 residents.
According to City Manager Bruce T. Moore, “The focus of the Citizens Academy is to educate citizens about the daily workings of City Hall. We know that government can be viewed as bureaucratic and overly regulatory. Through the LRCA, we strive to let people see challenges and opportunities of local government.”
Each session will focus on a different topic. Following a light meal, participants would hear a presentation from City staff that was followed up with interactive exercises.
According to UALR Professor David Sink, “This is a very unique experience. Citizens get the chance to ask tough questions of the people who make the decisions.”
“How often do you have the Police Chief and Fire Chief teaching a class at the same time? Or the Mayor and City Manager discussing the history of local government? This provided an up-close and personal, unique look into Little Rock’s government,” he continued.
The first session of the LRCA was held in early 2008. Twenty-nine citizens participated in the inaugural effort.
Moore noted, “The City of Little Rock places a high value on citizen participation. With 40 commissions and over 170 neighborhood associations, the City thrives on citizen engagement. The LRCA is another way for citizens to learn more about their city and become involved.”
To register for the LRCA, contact Toya Robinson in the City Manager’s Office at tarobinson@littlerock.gov or 371-4510. Also, applications may be picked up at City Hall. Deadline for applications is September 12, 2008
