Traffic Flow Changes at Cantrell; New Signal at Rebsamen Park Rd.
(Little Rock – February 13, 2006) Motorists in the Riverdale area of Little Rock will notice changes to the traffic signals in the area. These have been made in order to improve the flow of traffic at the intersection of Cedar Hill and Cantrell Road and should decrease overall delays at the intersection.
At Cedar Hill Road and Rebsamen Park Road, a new traffic signal has been installed. At 2:00 pm on Monday, February 13, it was activated to a flashing mode. As is standard procedure when a new traffic signal is installed, the light is put into operation in phases. For the next few days, motorists at the intersection will be greeted by flashing red lights in all four directions. Plans call for it to be placed in normal operation mode (the standard green, yellow, and red sequence) on Tuesday, February 21. This traffic signal was installed through funds from the 2004 Capital Bond Program.
New timing plans have also been implemented to coordinate this new signal with existing signals at Cedar Hill Road and Cantrell Road, Cedar Hill Road and Riverfront Drive and Cantrell Road and Riverfront Drive. Part of these timing changes will include the movement of southbound and northbound traffic on Cedar Hill at Cantrell at the same time. Currently southbound and northbound traffic receive exclusive green lights. In other words, traffic heading south sits through a red light while the northbound traffic has a green light, and vice versa. This “split-phase” will be eliminated with both directions moving at the same time. These adjustments will be in place by the end of February.
As a result of this change, southbound traffic on Cedar Hill Road at Cantrell Road will have only one (1) left turn lane instead of the current configuration where the inside southbound lane is reserved for left turns and the curbside southbound lane may turn left, continue southbound across Cantrell Road, or turn right.
Bill Henry, Traffic Engineering Manager, noted “This will eliminate the protected left turn signal for southbound traffic on Cedar Hill at Cantrell. Even so, the left turns are sufficiently small such that all motorists should see improved flow through the intersection.”
