LITTLE ROCK – The City of Little Rock will host a ribbon cutting and block party Saturday to celebrate the grand opening of businesses inside the 12th Street Station at the intersection of 12th and Cedar streets in Little Rock.

Southern Bancorp has opened a bank branch, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences operates a café and Philander Smith College’s Community Engagement Center is located in the building, which houses the Little Rock Police Department’s 12th Street substation.

Saturday’s 12th Street Community Celebration is sponsored by the City, LRPD, Southern Bancorp, UAMS and Philander Smith College.

“These new additions are yet another positive example of progress to revitalize and unify the 12th Street Corridor,” said Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott, Jr. “I’m grateful to Southern Bancorp, UAMS and Philander Smith for their investments in the community, and I look forward to continued partnerships that will enhance the quality of life and place for Little Rock residents.”

Saturday’s events begin at 10:30 a.m. with a ribbon cutting, followed by a block party from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  A free lunch will be offered to all participants, in addition to games and giveaways. More than $2,000 worth of prizes will be distributed during this day of celebration, unity and community-building.

“We’re excited to be a part of the collaboration bringing the 12th Street Station to life,” said Darrin Williams, CEO of Southern Bancorp. “At Southern Bancorp, a certified Community Development Financial Institution, we believe in the power of locally-focused financial services that create positive change.”

Southern Bancorp’s branch is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Operating hours for the 12th Street Community Café are 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays.

“Expanding access to nutritious food options is an essential component in our effort to create a better state of health in Arkansas,” said Dr. Cam Patterson, UAMS chancellor and CEO of UAMS Health. “UAMS is grateful for the opportunity to take part in a project that will benefit this community.”

Dr. Terry Esper, chairman of the Philander Smith College Board of Trustees, said: “We are thrilled to join our community partners in occupying the 12th Street corridor. This space will enhance our collaborative efforts in social justice, criminal justice, cybersecurity, and community and economic development. Together, we pave the way towards a brighter future."
