52 Year Old Building Upgraded Through 2004 Capital Bond Program

(Little Rock, AR—September 28, 2006) Neighbors, program participants, elected officials, and City staff gathered to celebrate the rededication of the Dunbar Community Center. The building reopened after $2 million of renovations and upgrades. The money for the upgrades came from the 2004 Capital Bond Program, which was overwhelmingly approved by Little Rock voters in 2003.

“This is a great day for the City of Little Rock,” said Mayor Jim Dailey. “The Dunbar Community Center not only serves the community; it also creates community.” City Director Johnnie Pugh echoed the Mayor’s sentiments, “Dunbar is important for this neighborhood, for Ward 1, and for the entire City. For 52 years it has served the entire City, now it is better equipped to do even more.”

The expansion and renovations include:
? A complete remodeling of the gym including new floor, bleachers, goals, ceiling and windows
? A addition of approximately 4500 square feet including an additional restroom, kitchen, accessible covered entrance
? New weight room in place of existing stage
? Computer lab
? New roof
? Improved HVAC/mechanicals
? A complete remodeling of restrooms
? A new floor in lobby
? A second floor addition of approximately 4500 square feet with game room, classroom and storage
? A new multi-purpose room for banquets, meetings, and conferences

The project was designed by Jackson Brown King Architects; Mattson Construction was the contractor.
The Dunbar Community Center, located at 1001 W. 16th Street, opened on October 10, 1954. The original facility was constructed for $210,000
