On October 3, 2023, at 9:01 p.m., Northwest Patrol Officers responded to 8500 Keller Drive in reference to a shooting. When officers arrived, they discovered 23-year-old Kumari Mayes, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the neck. MEMS responded and transported Mayes to a local hospital where he remained in critical condition. Officers secured the scene and notified supervisors from the Northwest Division along with Major Crimes detectives and the Crime Scene Search Unit. Detectives spoke with another victim on scene, 22-year-old Lateayua Price. During the preliminary investigation, it was determined the suspect, 23-year-old Joshua Johnson shot Mayes. Detectives would later obtain a warrant for Johnson for 1st Degree Battery. Mayes remained in the hospital until he succumbed to his injuries on May 28, 2024. The charges were then upgraded.
Update: On Thursday September 5, 2024, Johnson was taken into custody and served with a warrant for 1st Degree Murder. This investigation is ongoing and occurred in the Northwest Division.
