On Saturday July 15, 2023, LRPD officers with the Southwest Division responded to a shooting call for service at 5001 West 65th Street. Officers arrived and discovered one male victim, later identified as Walter Hair Jr., suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. MEMS responded and transported Mr. Hair to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Officers notified Homicide Detectives and secured the scene. Subsequently, a separate hospital informed LRPD officers of another victim, later identified as Derrick Weaver, was being treated for a gunshot wound to the neck. Detectives later determined that both victims were involved in the same incident at the same location. Later, the Pulaski County Coroner transported the body of Mr. Hair Jr. to the State Crime Lab for an autopsy and next of kin was notified.

The Crime Scene Search Unit responded shortly after Homicide Detectives. A preliminary investigation began as detectives canvassed the area for witnesses and video surveillance. Detectives then spoke with Mr. Weaver at the emergency room; however, when approached by detectives Mr. Weaver requested the presence of his attorney before providing a statement. This investigation is ongoing and occurred in the Southwest Division.
