Many of us want to lead healthier lifestyles, making bold resolutions to improve ourselves in the new year. Some of us who have reached fitness goals already may want to take on new challenges. Whatever the scenario, did you know that the City of Little Rock offers plenty of ways to get active throughout the year, beginning now?

Here are five (cost-effective) ways we can help:

5 Lace up

If you played team sports growing up, then solo gym workouts can be a little on the lonely side. But a pickup game of basketball (or maybe even volleyball) is possible at several of our gym-equipped community centers. Our adult leagues will start up in the summer, so why not get back into it now to brush the dust off your game?

4 Head outdoors

You might have to bundle up on the colder days, but winter in Little Rock is an opportune time to enjoy the great outdoors, with more than 60 parks and recreation areas to visit. Playgrounds, dog parks, mountain bike trails, and disc golf are just some of the offerings in addition to the miles of paved trails for running and cycling. http://www.littlerock.gov/ParksRecreation/parks/

3 Step to it

It’s almost game time, but you can still register for the 14th Annual Little Rock Marathon, the Race for Every Pace. In addition to the full 26.2 race, there is the Half-Marathon, 10K, 5K, Kid’s Marathon, and Relay. There is an official (and free) training program that anyone can join. Build-up training sessions have been going on since the fall, so the runs in January and February are for those people looking to cross the finish line in March. http://littlerockmarathon.com/official-training-program/

2 Go for three

A triathlon, that is. The Jim Daily Fitness and Aquatic Center is hosting its 2nd annual indoor triathlon on Saturday, Jan. 30. Ride a stationary bike, do laps in the indoor pool, and run the track inside Jim Dailey in this fun fitness challenge. Participation is $5 for non-members and $2 for kids. http://www.littlerock.gov/ParksRecreation/warmemorial/

1 Shake a leg

Whatever your style, we probably have a class that fits, whether it’s dance, boot camp, senior aerobics, Zumba, or jazzercise. Registration opened January 2, but you can still jump right into a program this month.
