Oaktober Kickoff Event

Oaktober 2024)

Details

Each October, people around the country celebrate oak trees by planting oak trees, volunteering, and learning more about oak trees. There are 29 species of oak in Arkansas, and some are only found in our beautiful state! Join us at the kickoff event and visit the nature trail between Southwest Community Center and Dee Brown Library.

🌳 Why Celebrate Oak Trees?

Oak trees are a keystone species, meaning entire ecosystems depend on them for survival and habitat. Acorns from oak trees feed more than 100 different wildlife species. Research by Doug Tallamy has found that over 500 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars live on oak trees—more than on any other tree. These insects play a crucial role in the food web as a food source for birds and other animals.

Beyond their ecological importance, oak trees are beautiful and long-lived. Their large branches provide shade, helping to cool down neighborhoods during the summer. They also help reduce flooding and erosion by absorbing rainwater.
