Little Rock Food Commission

The Little Rock Food Commission was created on March 19, 2024, by Ordinance No. 22,426. The goals of this Commission are to:

  • To assist the City in its efforts to reduce food insecurity; and,
  • To obtain community input on the resources needed to address food issues within the City;
  • To support urban agriculture, such as community gardens and other potential sources of fresh food; and
  • To promote educational programs about:
    • Diet-related diseases; and,
    • Food waste; and,
    • To increase public awareness of food programs, food deserts, and food policy decisions that elected officials should consider; and,
  • To establish methodologies and programs to monitor available data on the nutrition status of residents of the City most impacted by the inequities in the local food system; and,
  • To explore ways for the City to improve the availability and quality of food to its citizens.
AUTHORITY: Ordinance No. 22,426, passed by the Little Rock City Board of Directors on March 19, 2024, created this Commission.
TERM: Each member of this Commission will serve one (1), four (4) – year term.

  • Hunger Relief Program Representative
  • Agriculture Representative
  • City Board Representative
  • Three (3) At-Large Commissioners
DUTIES: The Little Rock Food Commission works to reduce food insecurity by gathering community input on necessary resources, supporting urban agriculture initiatives like community gardens, and promoting educational programs on diet-related diseases and food waste. The Commission also aims to raise public awareness about food programs, food deserts, and relevant food policy decisions. It develops methods to monitor nutrition data for residents most affected by food system inequities and explores ways to improve the availability and quality of food for the city's citizens.
SELECTION: The Mayor appoints members of this Commission, subject to approval by the Little Rock City Board of Directors.
