LITTLE ROCK– The City of Little Rock will move forward with demolition of a pedestrian bridge over West Markham Street based on recommendations from engineers who assessed extensive damage to the structure.
A large dump truck struck the bridge on Monday. Because of the severity of the impact to the bridge, engineers determined the structure is damaged beyond what can feasibly be repaired for public use. The Little Rock Police Department is investigating the crash.
The pedestrian bridge is located near the intersection of Markham and Dennison streets. West Markham Street between Barton Street and Thayer Street is indefinitely closed to through traffic for motorist and pedestrian safety. Motorists are asked to use the marked detour or to take alternate routes during the temporary closure.
The City’s Public Works team is seeking proposals from qualified demolition contractors. Once a contractor is selected, City officials will set a target date for reopening the street.
