Literacy

Reading on grade level by the end of third grade is important because this is when instruction transitions from learning to read to reading to learn. Access to books is a critical variable in learning how to read. In middle-income neighborhoods the ratio of books per child is 13 to 1, in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children.

Pulaski County Imagination Library

With support from the City of Little Rock, Pulaski County Imagination Library mails a high quality, age appropriate book to all registered children every month, addressed to them, at no cost to the child’s family.

Reading in the Rock

The City of Little Rock is partnering with the Little Rock School District to develop a culture of reading in our city. We will help students develop lifelong reading habits, increase access to books, and engage families and the community. Our goal is to promote the joy of reading and ensure 3rd graders meet grade-level reading proficiency. Reading in the Rock empowers the community to play a role in improving literacy through book drives, reading challenges, mentorship programs, and citywide events. Whether you are a parent, educator, volunteer, or business leader, you can make a difference—because when we invest in reading, we invest in the future of Little Rock’s children. Learn more here.
