History
In 1927, the City of Little Rock purchased two adjoining ravines for the creation of a municipal park. One was developed into what we now know as Allsopp Park, while the second remains preserved as undeveloped open space just to the north.
Frederick Allsopp, a prominent resident and passionate naturalist, was instrumental in shaping the vision for this park. In 1931, he commissioned landscape architect John Nolen to design a master plan that blended conservation with recreation. The plan called for a bird and wildlife sanctuary, along with amenities such as trails, ballfields, tennis courts, and a playground. Although Nolen’s plan was never fully realized, the park still reflects his vision, offering both active recreation and opportunities to enjoy the natural setting.
Through Allsopp’s generosity, funds were provided in his will for additional land purchases, expanding the park’s boundaries and ensuring its legacy as a community treasure.
