Cindy Miller Island is a unique natural destination along the Arkansas River, offering visitors the opportunity to experience a quiet riverfront environment in the heart of downtown Little Rock. Connected to the Arkansas River Trail by the Cindy Coates Miller Bridge, the island features natural surface trails, scenic overlooks, and abundant opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and wildlife observation. The island’s undeveloped character provides a peaceful contrast to the surrounding urban landscape while complementing the nearby Bill Clark Wetlands.
History
The island was opened to the public in 2017 with the completion of the Cindy Coates Miller Bridge, which was made possible through a gift from the Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable and Educational Trust. The bridge and island were dedicated in memory of Cindy Coates Miller, a longtime Arkansas philanthropist whose work helped provide more than $60 million in grants to educational, charitable, and community organizations throughout the state.
Today, Cindy Miller Island serves as a place where visitors can explore one of the few remaining natural sandbar islands along the Arkansas River. Carefully designed trails allow visitors to experience changing river landscapes, native vegetation, wetlands, and exceptional views of downtown while preserving the island’s natural habitat.
