When planting trees near streets, sidewalks, or utilities, it’s important to choose the right tree for the right location. Little Rock’s Urban Forestry Division recommends following these guidelines:
- Underground Utilities: Contact Arkansas One Call at (800) 482-8998 before digging. Do not plant trees within 5 feet of underground utilities.
- Overhead Power Lines: If overhead utility lines are present, select a tree species that will grow to less than 25 feet tall at maturity.
- Fire Hydrants: Plant trees at least 15 feet away from fire hydrants.
- Water Meters: Keep trees, including crape myrtles, at least 5 feet away from water meters.
Following these guidelines helps protect infrastructure, promote healthy tree growth, and maintain a safe urban environment.
