Reservoir Park is conveniently located just off one of Little Rock’s busiest corridors, offering a peaceful escape into nature. While the park was dramatically transformed by the 2023 tornado, ongoing restoration efforts are bringing back beloved amenities and creating a destination for the community to enjoy for generations to come.
History
Reservoir Park has long served as one of Little Rock’s premier regional parks, providing residents with a wooded escape in the center of the city. The site of Reservoir Park, adjacent to Jackson Reservoir, was acquired in 1967 from the Little Rock Water Works. Principal development of the park occurred in 1968 with funds provided through a municipal bond issue. Over the years, the park has grown to include hiking trails, a popular disc golf course, picnic facilities, playgrounds, and scenic overlooks while preserving its mature forest and connection to the city’s historic water system.
On March 31, 2023, an EF3 tornado tore directly through Reservoir Park, causing catastrophic damage. Thousands of trees were lost, park facilities were heavily damaged, and the landscape was dramatically transformed. The tornado destroyed much of the park’s tree canopy, damaged trails and recreation amenities, and left behind extensive debris, making Reservoir Park one of the hardest-hit parks in Little Rock. Recovery efforts have required years of cleanup, planning, and reforestation.
Today, Little Rock Parks & Recreation is restoring Reservoir Park through a phased redevelopment process. New amenities, including a playground, ballfield improvements, trails, and other park enhancements, are being constructed while thousands of new trees are being planted to help restore the park’s urban forest. Although the park looks different than it did before the tornado, these investments are ensuring Reservoir Park will continue to serve future generations as one of Little Rock’s signature community parks.
